Weight Loss or Fat
Loss is there a difference?
If you are on a weight
loss program of any type, you need to be aware of the fact that
what the scales tell you is not necessarily an accurate
indication of what is happening in your body. Many diets result
in an initial loss of water, some fat and even some muscle if you
do not have adequate protein. Did you know that muscle weighs
twice as much as fat? Muscle mass loss is one of the bio -markers
of ageing - so it is not good to lose muscle. Those lost kilos
may not indicate a significant loss of fat. It is important that
your weight loss program targets a reduction in your body fat
mass rather than your fluid and muscle mass.
Why Most Diets Don't Work
If you are overweight,
chances are you have tried many times to lose weight, and may
have succeeded, but when you look back over the years, the end
result is that you are still overweight and gradually getting
heavier. The problem with most diets is that they are restrictive
in some way, and none of us wants to live our lives under a
restriction that seems to take away one of the basic pleasures in
life.
It is important to look
at the emotional issues involved in the eating process. Some of
us eat for comfort to escape painful emotions, or just to feel
good, others have a co -dependent relationship with food,
considering it their 'friend' and feeling depressed if it is
taken away. Diets may fail because of setting unrealistic goals,
or having a defeatist attitude.
For weight loss to be
successful, you have to feel good about what you are doing and be
prepared to be patient - very patient. Depending on the
individual, there a number of ways of successfully losing weight.
It is important to remember that to improve your health, you need
to lose fat and either maintain or increase muscle mass.
An effective weight loss
program
An effective weight loss program needs to
result in a loss of body fat and maintenance of muscle mass.
Insulin needs to be kept in check, metabolic rate optimised and
general health maintained.
If you are overweight as
opposed to obese, just changing a few of your dietary habits and
including some more healthy food options may be all that is
needed. Eating foods compatible to your blood type and your body
type can also be helpful.
For those more in the
'obese' category, the 'Ultra Lite' diet can be very good. It is a
natural fat loss system that uses the body's own metabolism to
burn fat. It involves the use of low glycaemic index carbohydrates with a
moderate protein intake. This means
you do not need to go hungry, and can eat enjoyable and
sustaining meals providing they are made up of the right
nutritional balance. This is a very easy to follow program, with
a method of testing how much fat your are burning daily, without
getting on the scales.
Exercise is an important
part of any healthy lifestyle, but has to be done within the
individual's limits.
The liver has to be
healthy to lose body fat. - you may need to do some work to
improve liver function.
It may sound complicated,
but I can discuss your specific problems and work out a program
to help you to not only lose fat and improve your health, but to
stay that way.
What are the Health Risks
of Obesity?
 |
Cardiovascular disease - atherosclerosis,
hypertension, sudden death. |
 |
Diabetes millitus (type
2 ) and insulin resistance. |
 |
Cancer - endometrial
and postmenopausal breast cancers, prostate cancer, and
colonorectal cancer. |
 |
Gall Bladder &
liver disease |
 |
Sleep apnoea. |
 |
Joint problems and increased pain from
arthritis. |
 |
Hormonal imbalance. |
Some facts about fat :
 |
High blood insulin
levels lead to increased deposition of fat. It is
important to avoid high glycaemic index foods. |
 |
Obese people usually
develop insulin resistance as they get older. It is more
difficult for glucose (the basic fuel for energy
production) to get into cells - no wonder you also feel
fatigued! The resulting excess glucose is converted to
fat. |
 |
High levels of omega
6 fatty acids cause insulin resistance in cells,
resulting in a higher blood glucose level, with a higher
than normal insulin level. |
 |
Each of us have a
certain number of fat cells in our bodies (determined in
the growing stages of childhood). It is easier to reduce
the size of fats cells than it is to reduce the number of
fat cells. If you were overweight as a child, you will
have more difficulty in losing weight than a person who
was slim as a child. |
 |
Metabolic rate (the
rate that the body burns fuel when at rest) is an
important factor. It is controlled by the thyroid, but
there can be other influencing factors. It can be
decreased (making the loss of fat more difficult) by -
low calorie diets, gut toxicity. Increasing metabolic
rate is usually desirable in weight loss, but beware, it
will also make you feel more hungry! |
 |
High oestrogen
levels increase fat deposition and inhibit thyroid
function. |
 |
We all have brown
fat and white fat deposits - brown fat is good, it
encourages the body to use white fat as fuel and it
increases the basal metabolic rate. Both stress and high
insulin inhibit brown fat. There is a genetic
predisposition to ratio of brown and white fat. |
 |
Fat soluble toxins
are stored with fat tissue, so when losing fat, you need
to take precautions to prevent the effects of rapid
release of toxins. |
 |
The body will burn
fat when it runs out of glucose as a fuel, so it is a
waste of time trying to lose weight by exercising after a
substantial meal - it is best to exercise before
breakfast. |
 |
The liver is the
major calorie -burning organ in the body and regulates
fat metabolism. An unhealthy liver will store fat rather
than burn fat. |
 |
The Body Mass Index
(BMI) is used to gauge when a person is considered to be
overweight. It is calculated by dividing a persons height
in centimetres by the square of their weight in kilograms.
A BMI of 20 -25 is normal, and anything over 30 is obese. |
