Syndrome X also called Metabolic Syndrome

What is SyndromeX?  This term was adopted by the American Diabetes Association in 1988 to describe a very common combination of symptoms that predisposes very strongly to the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease - see table below. These conditions are a major cause of death and acceleration of the ageing process.  Syndrome X is now described as one of the largest disease epidemics to hit Australia.

Who is at risk?  If any three or more of the signs in the table below apply to you, it is time to consider immediate action.  Also if there is any family history of diabetes, you should see your doctor to have a blood test to measure HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting blood sugar.  Whilst waist measurement is the most obvious sign, if you have a thin waist, you can sill have syndrome X if at least three of the other criteria are met.

Men

Women

Waist measurement greater than 102 cm

Waist measurement greater than 88 cm

Fasting HDL less than 1.03 mmol/L

Fasting HDL less than 1.29 mmol/L

Fasting triglycerides greater than 1.69 mmol/L

Fasting triglycerides greater than 1.69 mmol/L

Fasting blood sugar greater than 6.1 mmol/L

Fasting blood sugar greater than 6.1 mmol/L

Blood pressure greater than 130/85

Blood pressure greater than 130/85

What are the symptoms?  You may not show any symptoms apart from being overweight.  You can feel well, but the long term effects of components of the syndrome such as high blood pressure, poor blood sugar control, and dyslipidaemia (bad balance of triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol) will have significant effects on health. It may show as any or a combination of the following:

bullet Abdominal obesity, History of failed weight loss attempts, Overweight, Diabetes

bullet Diet - Carbohydrate cravings

bullet Nervous system - Depression, Tinnitus (ringing in ears), Migraines, Headaches, Dizziness, Short sightedness

bullet Female reproductive - Early puberty in children, Lack of periods or scanty and infrequent flow, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Infertility

bullet Male reproductive - Erectile dysfunction, Impotence, Prostate cancer

bullet Sleep - Sleep apnoea, Snoring, Daytime sleepiness or fatigue

bullet Skin - Acne, Skin tags, Acanthosis nigricans (brown leathery change in skin folds), Male pattern balding, Skin cancers

bullet Cardiovascular - Hypertension, Vascular disease, Angina, Intermittent claudication.

bullet Race - Syndrome X is much more prevalent among Asians due to genetic factors.

Can Syndrome X be treated?

The answer is absolutely YES.  The underlying cause of SyndromeX is a very common condition called insulin resistance which has a direct link to abdominal obesity, poor control of blood sugar, hypertension and unhealthy balance of triglycerides and cholesterols.  Insulin resistance is when the energy producing cells of the body become resistant to the action of insulin.  The body then increases production of insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

How is Syndrome X treated?

bullet Each person is an individual and needs an individual treatment program.  You will need a recent blood test showing your fasting glucose, HDL and triglyceride levels.
bullet If you have a waist measurement of greater than 102 cm for men and greater than 88 cm for women, this must be reduced.  The type of diet that can do this most effectively is the Ultra Lite Weight and Health Management System.  This will teach you how to make wise choices with food for the rest of your life.  But you can still have Syndrome X if you are not overweight - see table above.

bullet Once your waist is in the safe zone, I will show you how to maintain your new body and how to keep your blood sugar levels under control.

bullet Depending on your blood test results, you may need herbal and nutritional treatment to address triglycerides, HDL and LDL cholesterol.

bullet If you have hypertension, again herbal and nutritional treatment can help greatly.

bullet Exercise is essential to all aspects of health and some easy and enjoyable regular exercise is a vital part of treating Syndrome X.

bullet If you are on medications for hypertension or cholesterol control, you will need to keep taking them until your doctor changes your prescription.  The treatments I use are "complementary medicine" - that is can safely be used in conjunction with your medical treatment.  I will confer with your doctor if necessary.

The good news is - you CAN overcome Syndrome X before it develops into more serious disease.  The choice is yours.  I specialise in treating Syndrome X and related disorders, because collectively they are the greatest killers of all Australians. These statistics could be greatly improved if the public understood more clearly what a great positive impact on health some easy lifestyle and nutritional changes could make.
