Caution with Supplementing High Doses of Fish Oil and Flaxseed Oil Growing awareness of the health benefits to be gained from supplementing with fish oil and essential fatty acids found in Flaxseed oil and Safflower oil has led to a significant increase in their consumption. In nearly all cases, this is very good. But with all supplements the idea that if a little is good, then a lot must be better, is not wise. These oils are poly unsaturated, which means that chemically speaking, they are more reactive, especially to oxygen and light. That is why you do not cook with them and store them carefully. Flaxseed oil especially needs to be kept in the fridge. If you are taking any of these oils regularly, it is strongly advised to take some vitamin E to prevent what is called lipid peroxidation – or reacting with oxygen in the body to form unhealthy products. Omega 6 and omega 3 needs to be in a ratio of about 2:1. But considering that the average diet has a ratio of about 20:1, it takes quite a lot of omega 3 to bring the ratio up to the ideal level before it tips the balance too far. Omega 6 is found in all animal products and omega 3 is found in plants and fish. If you are supplementing with high amounts of omega 3 from fish and flaxseeds oils and especially if you are a vegetarian, it would be a good idea to add some omega 6 from safflower oil to balance. A blood test is for ratio of fatty acids is available through a company called Diagnostic Insight. |
