January is traditionally the time for new year's resolutions, but with holidays and the festive feel of January, I think that February is often the time when we are ready to implement any new resolutions.

If you are serious about reducing weight this year, I have a special offer for this month only to readers of this newsletter.  I have been using the Ultra Lite weight management program for the past 8 years on hundreds of clients with great results.  Until the end of February 2010 you will get a FREE week valued at $76 when you purchase a 5 week program.  That is 6 weeks for the price of 5 weeks.  This is on top of the already discount price for a 5 week program of $440 which includes 6 visits plus one extra free visit. All visits can be claimed on your health fund if you are in the appropriate scale.  If you have done Ultra Lite with me before, there is a further discount of $45, reducing the price to $395 for 6 weeks.

This offer is only available if you mention this newsletter.

Is your digestive system suffering from holiday season overload?  Do you have an increase in bloating, reflux, or perhaps a slight increase in weight and not feeling as energetic as you should?

You could benefit from a digestive system detoxification and liver support program.  The digestive system can be a major source of toxins to the body, especially when digestion is poor and an adverse balance of good and bad bacteria develops.  I can advise you on the best treatment to suit your individual needs.

The liver - an amazing chemical factory

The liver is perhaps the hardest working organ in our body.  The brain gets to sleep, the digestive system can get a rest (if we let it), and organs like the heart and kidneys are working constantly, but are only overworked when we increase their load.

The liver has to deal with all chemicals that are either produced by the body or come into the body via the mouth, lungs or skin that cannot be eliminated via the kidneys.  A less than perfect diet (processed food chemicals, pesticides etc.), overeating, alcohol, antibiotics and stress will result in toxins being produced in the digestive system.  Everything absorbed by the digestive system except fat goes directly to the liver.  Fat is absorbed by chylomicrons  into the bloodstream and from there eventually finds it's way to the liver.  Most toxins from the environment and products produced by the body have to be processed by the liver and changed chemically so they can be excreted by the kidneys in urine and by the liver in bile.

The liver is like a huge chemical factory, and like any factory can only deal with a so many tasks at any one time.  It can so easily be overwhelmed with work and unable to complete all tasks on time and toxins awaiting treatment may be stored in fat tissue or bone.  The factory of the liver is divided into 2 areas called Phase 1 and Phase 2.  In the Phase 1 area of the factory the toxin undergoes a chemical reaction to prepare it for Phase 2.  This process involves making the toxin more reactive (and usually more toxic) so that the Phase 2 process is able to make the toxin suitable for excretion by the kidneys and liver.  If Phase 2 cannot keep up with Phase 1, some very toxic chemicals may end up in the body.

Phase 1 is increased by things like stress, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, medications and various toxins.  The more of these things in our life, the more the liver is likely to be unable to cope as it should.  Some of the things that encourage Phase 2 are things found in a good diet such as vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, turmeric and antioxidants.  Couple a poor diet with the common inducers of Phase 1, and it is no wonder adverse symptoms result.

The liver is the only organ in the body that can regenerate, providing the damage is not too severe.  Be kind to your liver.  Have a good diet with lots of vegetables, consider stress management, do some exercise, don't smoke, have alcohol and caffeine only in moderation and avoid chemical toxins, especially car fumes, cleaning chemicals, food additives and pesticides.  Treat your liver to a gentle naturopath supervised detoxification program once per year.  Beware detox programs that do little more than cause diarrhoea and increase urine flow.

Iodine and Selenium are vital minerals for thyroid health

Iodine deficiency is a major problem in the world and in Australia a study published in the Medical Journal of Australia in 2006 found that many children in Australia are borderline iodine deficient.

Iodine is well known for it's importance in thyroid health.  Adequate iodine is especially important in infants and in pregnancy.  In infants iodine deficiency can cause hearing loss, learning deficits, brain damage and thyroid problems.  In women iodine deficiency is linked to infertility, gestational hypertension, first trimester abortion and stillbirth.

Decline in iodine intake in Australia is linked to changes in the dairy industry who now use chlorine based cleansers for equipment instead of the previous iodine based cleansers.  There has also been a decrease intake of iodised salt.  It is recommended that pregnant women take a multi vitamin/mineral that contains iodine and if in doubt, have iodine levels checked by your doctor, as too much iodine in the diet can be harmful.

Selenium and iodine work together in the body.  A recent study of 2331 school children in Iran showed that despite iodine supplementation, about 1/3 of the children had goitre (enlarged thyroid) with a significant higher proportion in those who were also deficient in selenium. The thyroid disorders were attributed mainly to selenium deficiency.

Selenium has many actions in the body, mainly through its role in antioxidant activity.  Selenium is vital for normal thyroid function.  Selenium and iodine can be both found in a good multi vitamin/mineral.  Supplementation with selenium or iodine needs to be done with care.

There are many other factors that can influence thyroid health.  Naturopathic treatment may be of assistance in conjunction with medical treatment in certain cases.
