New discovery – why it is easier to overeat as we get older

Recent research shows that a part of the brain that controls appetite can degenerate as we get older, increasing likelihood of weight gain.

Previously mature age weight gain was attributed to reduced activity and perhaps more affluent lifestyle, but this research found that the effect of high blood sugar after a meal increased free radical activity in the brain, damaging the cells that control appetite.

The effect is to cause a gradual decline in the ability to judge when our hunger is satisfied. Couple that with reduced exercise and increased eating out and you have a certain recipe for increasing weight, reducing energy and vitality and increasing possibility of progressing to serious conditions like diabetes and heart attack.

What can you do about it?
  1. Do not eat meals that increase your blood sugar quickly. Avoid high glycaemic index foods and combine carbohydrates with protein.
  2. Take an antioxidant supplement to reduce free radical attack. You could take a capsule or high antioxidant foods like Berries, Chlorella and Spirulina
  3. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables.
  4. Get some regular exercise
  5. If you are overweight, come and see me and I can show you a proven way to reduce weight. For more information on weight control ring Peter Kelly on 9580 6708 or email to peter@peterkelly.com.au
