Healthy Eating Pyramid A recent study published by Harvard School of Medicine, heavily criticised the traditional "Food Pyramid", which featured bread, cereal, rice, and past as the foods recommended to eat most. The original pyramid was published by the US Department of Agriculture, with possibly more interest in selling grains than in the health of the public. The USA has become the world's leading nation in obesity by following this diet, and Australia is not far behind. If you look on the internet, you will still see the old food pyramid being promoted by many educational sites. We must not ignore more recent research, which has proven that carbohydrates can be converted to fats in our body very easily, and that simply avoiding fats is not the way to a healthy body. New healthy food pyramid Exercise and
weight control are the most important factors in the new Healthy Eating Pyramid. White bread, white rice, and pasta are moved from the bottom (most important) to the top (have least amount). The old pyramid has formed the basis of nutritional education for many years and Australia and America have become the most obese nations on earth by basing their diets on the nutritionally empty calories of refined flour products. Whole grains include brown rice, corn, rye, wheat, buckwheat, oats, millet and barley. Good oils are included in the most important foods in our diet – they are essential for good health. Fish, eggs, nuts, and legumes are more important in the diet. Raw nuts are a great snack food. Dairy intake may be supplemented by a calcium supplement. This has been shown by the Harvard School of Medicine to be poor dietary advice, but is still used by many health professionals and educators Note the emphasis on having a diet based on high carbohydrate foods. The reality is that most foods eaten in this group are highly refined products with a high glycaemic index. The body will turn these into fat very quickly. Note the avoidance of fat with no allowance for intake of essential fatty acids.
