Vitamin Supplementation Reduces the Risk of Developing Cataracts A cataract is the loss of transparency of the lens of the eye, resulting in blurred vision, and progressively leading to blindness. It is generally thought that antioxidants can reduce risk of developing cataracts. There have been many studies done on various nutrients and cataracts. This study from Arch. Opthalmol 118 (11), 1556-63 (2000) was based on 3089 subjects and found that in those using multivitamins or any supplement containing vitamins E and C for more than 10 years had a 60 % lower incidence of cataract regardless of their diet and lifestyle. No protective effect was found in short term use of vitamins. Many people believe that if they eat the right foods there is no need to supplement with vitamins. But the facts are that today foods do not have the expected vitamins and minerals due to storage and growing methods. We are all under the stress of modern living. The result is that generally our need for vitamins and minerals cannot be met by our food. A recent American study found that there was a widespread deficiency of essential nutrients in the average diet which could cause cellular damage similar to radiation exposure in its effects. The study concluded that these nutrient deficiencies are likely to be a major cause of cancer. It suggested that there should be at least 5 servings per day of fresh fruit and vegetables, but only 32 % of American adults and 20% of children and adolescents have this minimum of fruit and vegetables. These examples illustrate the fact that the majority of people are not getting enough nutrition, whether it be from natural foods or from supplements. I can give you advice on good diet and the supplements that are best suited to your needs so that you can reduce your risk of developing serious disease.
