Flaxseed significantly reduces breast cancer As reported in Clinical Cancer Research 2005:11:3828-35. This study showed that over a period of 32 days a group of postmenopausal women recently diagnosed with breast cancer had a significant improvement in biological markers of cancer progression after eating 25 grams of ground flaxseeds daily. The placebo group had no change in biological markers. The researchers concluded that “the consumption of flaxseed has the potential to delay disease progression of preinvasive or invasive breast cancer by changing the phenotype of cancer cells to a less aggressive form, reducing tumour growth, and increasing apoptosis”. Apoptosis is how the body kills cancer cells. History of Flaxseeds Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil are just beginning to become known among those born after the second world war. But before that, flaxseed was very well known. Archaeological evidence indicates its use in Babylon around 5000 BC. In the 5th century BC, Hippocrates advised its use for some digestive problems, and in the 8th century, Charlemagne passed a law compelling the consumption of flaxseed. Mahatma Gandhi once said: “Wherever flax seed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health.” As well as health benefits, the fibres of the flax plant were used to make linen. The oil from the flaxseed was popular for its use in paints. In its non food use it is usually called linseed oil. Health Benefits of Flaxseed Flaxseed oil is a very rich source of the beneficial omega 3 fatty acids (LNA). Flaxseed oil daily is a great way to help balance the typical Australian diet which is low in LNA and high in omega 6 fatty acids from animal sources. Vegetarians may not need as much LNA and need to balance Flaxseed oil with some Safflower oil. Both oils must be cold pressed and stored in dark containers to avoid rancidity. Crushed flaxseeds contain high amounts of lignans which are thought to exhibit anti-cancer properties. In the breast cancer trial mentioned earlier, patients ate a daily muffin containing 25g of flaxseeds. The only problem with crushed flaxseeds is that the oil component easily reacts with oxygen and becomes rancid. In order to get the most from your flaxseeds, I suggest that you use a coffee grinder to grind them daily. Never store them and do not eat them whole as they will pass straight through undigested. Recent Research on Flaxseeds and Flaxseed Oil indicates they may be helpful in the following conditions:
